Did Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix date or have a "fling" at one point in time?

I understand "Across the Universe" is a fictional movie, but the relation with Sadie and Joe seems symbolic towards Janis and Jimi, I was just curious because there isn't a lot of information on either of them.
