How do I remove an unused fireplace?

I am trying to remove a fireplace from an upstairs bedroom, Its an ugly old steel surround with a moulded concrete backing that protrudes about 3 inches from a concrete wall. To remove the concrete backing should I just break it away from the wall with a chisel or sledgehammer? And would I then remove the rear bricks etc in the fireplace opening? After that I should be able brick the opening up I think? Any suggestions?
