What is a one word answer that defines "how things work" ?

My friends and family always like to do sports and hang out doing normal things. My self i would rather be behind a microscope watching how things evolve. I would rather open a drill (used to drill screws in the wall) or deconstruct an item. Is there any one word answer that I could give my friends and family so that they can understand me better?
